마틴 로이드 존스(Martyn Lloyd Jones)와 아더 핑크(Arthur Pink), 이 두 인물은 동시대를 살았던 영국의 목사들이었습니다. 로이드 존스는 런던 중심가의 웨스트민스터 채플에서 목회를 하면서 그 시대에 최고의 설교가로 인정받았고 전 세계에 영향을 끼쳤습니다. 하지만 핑크는 30대 중반 이후 설교할 강단이 없어서 할 수 없이 월간지 ‘성경연구’(Studies in the Scriptures)에 설교를 쓰다가 루이스 섬에서 외롭게 삶을 마감했습니다. 우리가 보기에는 로이드 존스 목사는 성공했고, 아더 핑크는 실패한 목사처럼 보일 것입니다. 그러나 핑크가 죽은 이후에 핑크가 월간지 문서였던 ‘성경연구’에 남긴 설교원고들은 전 세계의 다양한 언어로 번역되어 수많은 기독교인들의 영적 삶을 부요하게 해주었고 엄청난 영향을 지금도 끼치고 있습니다.
또 미국 대통령은 현재까지 46명입니다. 이렇게 많은 대통령 중에서 제일 기억에 남는 인물이 있습니까? 저는 개인적으로 아브라함 링컨입니다. 아브라함 링컨은 기도의 사람으로 하나님께 귀하게 쓰임 받았던 하나님의 사람이었다고 생각하며 개인적으로 존경하고 있습니다. 역사적으로 볼 때에 세계적인 인물들이 많이 있었지만 우리들의 기억에 남는 인물들은 많이 없습니다. 그러나 하나님께 쓰임 받았던 인물들은 공통적으로 우리들의 기억에 남으면서 그들을 흠모하고 그들을 닮아 보고자 그들의 이름을 사용하고 연구를 많이 합니다. 성경에는 다양한 인물들이 있습니다만 오늘은 사무엘 상하를 중심으로 해서 말씀을 살펴보고자 합니다.
Martyn Lloyd Jones and Arthur Pink, these two figures were contemporaneous British ministers. Lloyd-Jones was recognized as the best preacher of his time while ministering at Westminster Chapel in central London and had an impact around the world. However, since he was in his mid-thirties, Pink had no pulpit to preach on, so he had no choice but to write a sermon for the monthly magazine ‘Studies in the Scriptures’ and ended his lonely life on the Isle of Lewis. To us, Reverend Lloyd-Jones seems to have succeeded and Arthur Fink seems to have failed. However, after Pink’s death, the sermon manuscripts that Pink left in ‘Bible Study’, which was a monthly magazine, were translated into various languages around the world, enriching the spiritual lives of many Christians, and still exerting a tremendous influence.
Also, there are 46 US presidents so far. Out of so many presidents, who is the most memorable? I personally am Abraham Lincoln. I think that Abraham Lincoln was a man of God who was preciously used by God as a man of prayer, and he is personally respected. Historically, there have been many world-class figures, but there are not many memorable ones. However, the people used by God commonly use their names and study a lot in order to remain in our memory, adore them, and resemble them. There are various characters in the Bible, but today I would like to examine the Word, focusing on 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel

15:23 이는 거역하는 것은 점치는 죄와 같고 완고한 것은 사신 우상에게 절하는 죄와 같음이라 왕이 여호와의 말씀을 버렸으므로 여호와께서도 왕을 버려 왕이 되지 못하게 하셨나이다 하니
1 Samuel 15:22-23
15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
사무엘은 우리모두가 잘 알고 있는 것처럼 한나의 아들로서 한나가 기도하여 낳은 아들입니다. 그리고 사무엘은 젖을 뗀 후에 성전에 맡겨 놓고 1년에 한 번씩 한나는 사무엘을 만났습니다. 어린 사무엘이 늙은 엘리 제사장을 섬기는 것이 결코 쉬운 일이 아니었고 엘리 제사장의 아들들은 하나님을 떠나 불량자로서의 삶을 살고 있는 환경에서 사무엘은 살아야만 했습니다. 그러나 사무엘은 하나님의 은혜로 그의 어머니 한나의 기도로 말미암아 잘 성장해서 사사시대의 마지막 사사로서 그리고 첫 선지자와 제사장직을 수행하였습니다. 특히 온 이스라엘 중 아스다롯과 바알 등의 우상을 없애고 오직 여호와 하나님만 섬기게 했던 진정한 하나님의 사람이었습니다. 사무엘이 하나님께 쓰임 받았던 그 이유는 사무엘은 기도하기를 쉬는 것을 죄로 생각하며, 하나님을 의지 하여 하나님의 말씀에 순종하여 사명을 잘 감당하였기 때문입니다.
그러나 이스라엘 백성들의 요구로 인하여 사울 왕을 세웠지만 처음에는 겸손하였으나 왕이 된 이 후로 권력의 맛을 알게 되었고 교만함으로 가득했습니다. 사울 왕은 아말렉 족속을 진멸하라는 하나님의 말씀에 순종하기 보다는 자신의 권력을 의지해서 자신의 명예를 위하여 원하는 대로 모든 일들을 마음대로 행하였습니다. 즉 하나님의 말씀에 순종 하여 왕으로서의 일을 행하기보다는 선지자인 사무엘을 통하여 전하는 하나님의 말씀에 불순종하였던 것입니다. 결국 사무엘은 하나님께서 교만한 사울 왕을 버렸다는 소식을 전하게 됩니다. 그리고 순종이 제사보다 낫다는 유명한 이야기를 전하고 사무엘은 하나님께 부름 받는 그날까지 사울 왕을 만나지 않았습니다. 사울 왕은 단 한번도 하나님께 기도드렸다는 내용도 없었으며, 회개하였다는 내용도 없이 자신의 욕망을 추구하는 삶속에서 안타까운 삶을 살았음을 성경에서는 이야기 하고 있습니다. 죽는 그날까지 질투와 시기로 가득하여 다윗을 죽이려고 평생을 쫓아 다녔던 사울 왕이었습니다.
Samuel, as we all know well, is the son of Hannah who prayed and gave birth to Samuel. And after Samuel was weaned, he left him in the temple, and Hannah met Samuel once a year. It was never easy for the young Samuel to serve the old priest Eli, and Samuel had to live in an environment where the sons of Eli the priest left God and lived a life of delinquents. However, by the grace of God, through the prayers of his mother Hannah, Samuel grew up well and served as the last judge in the period of the judges and the first prophet and priest. He was especially a true man of God who got rid of idols such as Ashtaroth and Baal among all Israel and made them serve only Jehovah God. The reason why Samuel was used by God was because Samuel considered it a sin to stop praying and fulfilled his mission well by relying on God and obeying God’s Word.
However, due to the demands of the Israelites, he made Saul king. He was humble at first, but after becoming king, he got a taste of his power and was full of arrogance. Rather than obeying God’s command to destroy the Amalekites, King Saul relied on his power and did everything he wanted for his own honor. In other words, rather than obeying God’s Word and acting as a king, he disobeyed God’s Word through his prophet Samuel. In the end, Samuel delivers the news that God has abandoned the arrogant King Saul. And after telling the famous story that obedience is better than sacrifice, Samuel did not meet King Saul until the day he was called by God. The Bible tells us that King Saul never once prayed to God, and he lived a pitiful life in pursuit of his desires without even saying that he repented. He was King Saul, who was full of jealousy and envy until the day he died and pursued David all his life to kill him.
2. 나단 선지자와 다윗 왕

12:7 나단이 다윗에게 이르되 당신이 그 사람이라 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이와 같이 이르시기를 내가 너를 이스라엘 왕으로 기름 붓기 위하여 너를 사울의 손에서 구원하고
12:13 다윗이 나단에게 이르되 내가 여호와께 죄를 범하였노라 하매 나단이 다윗에게 말하되 여호와께서도 당신의 죄를 사하셨나니 당신이 죽지 아니하려니와
2 Samuel 12:7, 13
12:7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
12:13 And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.
나단선지자와 다윗 왕은 평생을 함께 하였던 관계였습니다. 나단 선지자는 다윗과 솔로몬 시대까지 활동했던 인물입니다.
위의 본문의 내용은 다윗 왕이 밧세바를 범하고 우리야를 죽인 사건에 대해서 다윗 왕을 책망하였습니다. 나단은 왕 앞에서도 두려움 없이 하나님의 사람인 다윗을 사랑하기 때문에 다윗의 죄를 적나라하게 지적하고 있습니다. 그리고 다윗 왕은 왕이었음에도 불구하고 나단에게 솔직하게 자신이 여호와께 죄를 범하였다고 고백하고 있는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다.
이러한 다윗의 모습은 과연 어디에서 나온 것일까요!. 광야생활이었습니다. 하나님은 불순종과 교만했던 사울 왕을 버리고 다윗을 택하여 사무엘 선지자로부터 기름부음을 받게 됩니다. 그렇지만 십대 소년으로서 일찍 기름부음을 받았던 다윗은 30세에 이스라엘 2대 왕이 되기까지 수많은 고난과 역경을 겪으며 연단 받았고 광야생활을 경험했던 다윗이었습니다. 한마디로 다윗의 인생은 충성스럽게 섬겼던 사울왕의 질투와 시기, 미움으로 인하여 전혀 생각하지도 못했던 산과 광야로 도망자로서의 인생을 살아야만 했습니다.
이러한 광야생활에서 다윗은 고독과 침묵 속에서 외로움을 배웠으며, 원수였던 사울 왕을 사랑하고 용서하는 인격을 갖춘 지도자로서 하나님만을 철저히 의지하여 기도하는 하나님의 사람으로서 훈련을 받은 것입니다. 이러한 훈련과 연단 가운데 하나님의 마음에 합한 사람으로 인정받게 된 것입니다.
Prophet Nathan and King David had a lifelong relationship. The prophet Nathan was active until the time of David and Solomon.
The contents of the text above rebuked King David for the incident in which King David violated Bathsheba and killed Uriah. Nathan is pointing out David’s sins plainly because he loves David, the man of God, without fear even in front of the king. And even though King David was king, we can see that he is frank with Nathan and confesses that he has sinned against Jehovah.
Where did this David look come from!. It was a wilderness life. God abandoned King Saul, who was disobedient and arrogant, and chose David to be anointed by the prophet Samuel. However, David, who was anointed at an early age as a teenager, was refined through countless hardships and hardships and experienced life in the wilderness until he became the second king of Israel at the age of 30. In a word, David’s life had to be lived as a fugitive in the mountains and wilderness that he had never thought of because of King Saul’s jealousy, jealousy, and hatred of him, whom he had faithfully served.
In this wilderness life, David learned loneliness in solitude and silence, and as a leader with the character to love and forgive his enemy, King Saul, he was trained as a man of God who prayed by completely relying on God. Through such training and refinement, he was recognized as a person after God’s own heart.

마틴 로이드 존스 목사님은 이러한 말을 하였습니다. “인간에게 일어날 수 있는 가장 불행한 일은 그가 준비도 되기 전에 성공하는 것이다.”라고 하였습니다. 반드시 빨리 성공한다고 해서 결코 좋은 것만은 아니라는 것입니다.
이 세상의 정치, 경제, 문화, 스포츠, 엔터테이먼트 등 다양한 면에서 일찍 성공했다고 하는 사람들이 다양한 현실을 맞이하지만 너무도 쉽게 무너지는 모습들을 많이 보게 됩니다. 그 이유는 무엇일까요!. 광야생활이 없었기 때문입니다.
사울 왕이 왜 하나님으로부터 버림을 받았을까요. 왜 이렇게 교만하였을까요. 훈련된 광야 생활이 없는 가운데 진정한 자신을 발견하지 못하고 세상이 유혹하는 권력, 명예, 물질의 맛을 너무도 일찍 알았기 때문입니다. 그 반대로 다윗은 처절하리만큼 하나님으로부터 훈련을 받는 가운데 하나님의 때를 기다리며 하나님께 기도하는 다윗이었습니다. 그렇습니다. 하나님의 사람들은 이 땅을 살아가는 가운데 다양한 일들을 맞이하며 살아가게 됩니다. 나에게 열려있는 것들이 하나님으로부터 온 것인지 십자가를 붙들고 내 자신을 부인하는 가운데 말씀과 기도, 성령충만함속에서 몸부림치며 분별하는 삶을 살아가야 하겠습니다. 다윗처럼 하나님께 질문하면서 십자가의 길을 가는 자세를 가져야 한다는 것입니다.
오직 한 번뿐인 인생(Only one life), 찰스 토마스 스터드 (C.T. Studd ,1860-1931)가 지었고 김장섭씨가 번역한 시의 한 부분을 인용하겠습니다.
“오직 한 번뿐인 인생, 단 한 번뿐인 인생 흐르는 시간도 머지않아 멈추겠지, 이내 주님 만날 그 날이 오고, 나는 심판의 보좌 앞에 서겠지, 오직 한 번뿐인 인생, 속히 지나가리라, 오직 그리스도를 위한 일만이 영원하리라”
Pastor Martin Lloyd-Jones said this. He said, “The most unfortunate thing that can happen to a man is to succeed before he is even ready.” Just because you succeed quickly doesn’t necessarily mean it’s always good.
People who claim to have been successful early in various aspects of the world, such as politics, economy, culture, sports, and entertainment, face various realities, but we see a lot of them collapsing too easily. What could be the reason!. Because there was no wilderness life.
Why was King Saul abandoned by God? Why was he so arrogant? It is because, in the absence of a disciplined wilderness life, he did not discover his true self and learned too early the taste of power, honor, and material things tempted by the world. On the contrary, David was a David who prayed to God while waiting for God’s time while undergoing training from God to the extent of being desperate. That’s right. As people of God live on this earth, they encounter various things. I must live a life of discerning whether the things that are open to me are from God, holding on to the cross and denying myself, struggling in the Word, prayer, and being filled with the Holy Spirit. Like David, we must have the attitude of asking God and going the way of the cross.

“Only one life, yes only one, Soon will its fleeting hours be done; Then, in ‘that day’ my Lord to meet, And stand before His Judgment seat; Only one life,’ twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last”
